DEPUTY CONSTABLE CADET
(Basic Peace Officer Course)

Accepted Cadets will be full-time employees while attending the UHD Police Academy. Upon graduation, you will become a sworn Probationary Patrol Deputy, and you will be assigned to the Patrol Division for a minimum of a two-year commitment.

Important Information
- All candidates will be evaluated based upon their formal education, work and/or military experience, test scores, etc.
- Applications for candidates not selected to attend the next scheduled course will remain active for future courses for one year. After one year, candidates will be required to complete a new application.
- If an applicant fails any portion of the application process, the application will be immediately declined. Unless the applicant has been permanently disqualified from employment with Precinct One, the applicant will be able to reapply after one year (12 months).
- Upon graduation from the UHD Police Academy, applicants will be required to successfully complete a field training program. Failure to successfully complete the field training program due to performance or voluntary withdrawal may result in termination of employment with Precinct One.
- The Constable may offer continued employment for those who fail the field training program. Such offer of continued employment is not guaranteed and will be contingent upon the agency’s needs and available positions in other job classifications.
Cadet Eligibility Requirements
General
- Must meet Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) background requirements. (See below for additional information.)
- Must be a U.S. Citizen (born or naturalized). (In accordance with Texas Occupations Code Sec. 1701.3095, a person may also be licensed if the person meets the requirements for licensing, is an honorably discharged veteran of the armed forces of the United States with at least two years of service before discharge, and presents evidence satisfactory to the commission that the person has applied for United States citizenship.)
- Must be at least twenty-one years of age.
- Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License.
- Liability insurance will be required by your graduation date.
- Eyesight must be correctable to 20/20.
- Correctable normal audible range in both ears.
- Must pass all phases of the application process.
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- Additional consideration may be afforded to candidates who have college credit hours with at least a 2.0 GPA from an accredited institution.
- Additional consideration may be afforded to candidates who are veterans of the United States Armed Forces with an Honorable Discharge.
Application Process
- Submit a complete application for employment. The application must include documentation detailing the applicant’s education, experience, and veteran status. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
- Qualified applicants will be contacted to schedule testing:
- Candidates must successfully complete Physical Testing, which consists of a 1.5 mile run in under 15 minutes, 34 push-ups in under one minute, and 34 sit-ups in under one minute.
- Candidates must successfully pass the Precinct One POST exam with a minimum score of 70%.
- Candidates who successfully complete testing will be ranked based on the best-qualified candidates. Employment will be offered to the best-qualified candidates and will be limited to available Cadet positions.
External Candidates (not current Precinct One employees):
- TCOLE requires that all Peace Officer candidates undergo a thorough background investigation, which may include a polygraph examination.
- Candidates will be required to attend an interview with Patrol Division supervisors prior to any offer of employment.
Internal Candidates (current Precinct One employees):
- Current employees do not require a new background investigation.
- Review of performance, attendance, and status of pending Internal Affairs Investigation, if any, may be considered.
- Candidates will be required to complete Physical and Psychological evaluations per TCOLE (Texas Commission of Law Enforcement) licensing requirements. (If these evaluations are required by the Police Academy, applicant will not be required to complete another Physical or Psychological evaluation as part of the hiring process.)
- Selected candidates will be contacted at least two weeks before the start of the UHD Police Academy to complete the onboarding or transfer process.
- Selected candidates will be required to complete at least six ride-alongs with Patrol personnel prior to beginning the UHD Police Academy.
Texas Commission On Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Background requirements:
- Must not have court-ordered community supervision or probation for a criminal offense above the grade of class “B” misdemeanor within the last ten (10) years from the court order.
- Must not be currently charged with any criminal offense for which conviction would be a bar to licensure.
- Must not have been convicted of a class “B” misdemeanor offense in the last ten years.
- Must not have ever been convicted of a class “A” misdemeanor or higher level offense.
- Never been convicted or placed on community supervision in any court for an offense involving family violence.
- Not prohibited from operating a motor vehicle.
- Not prohibited from possessing a firearm.
