Lateral Deputy Requirements

Lateral Deputy Requirements:

  • Must be a licensed Peace Officer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) in good standing and eligible to be commissioned,
  • Must have a minimum of twelve (12) months of continuous experience as a full-time Peace Officer in a first responder position at any one agency,
  • Must Possess a Valid Texas Driver’s License Texas,
  • Must successfully complete firearm’s qualification,
  • Must pass a thorough background investigation (Criminal background check, personal interview, etc.),
  • If there is a break in service of 180 days or more, the applicant must pass a Physical and Psychological evaluation, as required by TCOLE, at their own expense, and
  • Must pass a drug screening.

NOTE: It is the responsibility of the candidate to ensure all their TCOLE Training Mandates are up to date and ready to be commissioned.


OUT-OF-STATE CANDIDATES:

NOTE:

  • To qualify for this position, required experience, education and skills must be clearly stated on your application’s employment history.

  • Experience obtained while in the military must also be included as part of your employment history on the application.

COPIES OF THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTS ARE REQUIRED WITH YOUR APPLICATION:

  • Birth Certificate (issued by government agency NOT hospital) or Certificate of Naturalization. (In accordance with Texas Occupations Code Sec. 1701.3095, a person may also be licensed if the person meets the requirements for licensing, is an honorably discharged veteran of the armed forces of the United States with at least two years of service before discharge, and presents evidence satisfactory to the commission that the person has applied for United States citizenship.)
  • Social Security Card.
  • Driver’s License (front and back).
  • Proof of Education: High School Diploma or Transcript, GED Certificate or College Transcript (If transcripts, a sealed original will be required at background investigation stage).
  • DD-214 Military Discharge form [if applicable] (copy of original Member -4 Form),
  • TCOLE Peace Officer license,
  • Credit report with credit score from one of the credit bureaus,
  • Proof of Auto Insurance, and
  • Passport sized photograph.

 

Documents must be attached to the application before submitting. 

Original documents will be required at the background investigation interview along with three (3) letters of recommendation (must have the recent date, original signature, and undersigned Phone number).
