COURSE DESCRIPTION: This 24-hour course will offer an in-depth psychological overview of violent offending behaviors with a focus on differentiating between crime motivations and offender profiles. The course is designed to help law enforcement officers understand the development of aggressive and violent behavior through adolescence and adulthood. It will offer the following:
- A critical assessment of offender profiling techniques at the point of arrest, during criminal investigations and suspect interviewing.
- The relationship between mental illness, substance abuse, personality disorders, psychopathy and the ‘Dark Triad’ to violence.
- How to differentiate between instigators and followers in co-offending groups and gangs and how these impact on policing and investigative strategies.
- A focus on homicide, serial murder, terrorism, and sexual violence will then be explored in detail.
